Chocolate-making part of town's history
Posted Nov 4, 2010 By Katherine WillyardDear Editor:
This letter is in response to "Chocolate leaves bad taste in mouth of reader." While it is true that Hershey is no longer part of our present in the town of Smiths Falls, I argue that it does not mean that we cannot celebrate our vibrant chocolate past.
By recognizing the tradition of chocolate making in Smiths Falls we are not celebrating Hershey, but rather we are owning our history. Many residents of Smiths Falls and the surrounding area worked hard throughout the years making chocolate. The Canal, Railway and Chocolate Festival provides us with an opportunity to celebrate their efforts alongside some of the other features that have made and currently make our town a unique place.
We should view the festival as an opportunity to celebrate our town's heritage of chocolate making. It is important to look to the future, but also to give a nod to the past.
Sincerely,
Katherine Willyard
